Children’s Dentistry in Downtown Calgary

In our clinic, Children’s Dentistry is  important  to us. Our goal is to help our little patients develop and maintain great oral hygiene habits that they can carry with them into adulthood.  We believe in prevention and pride ourselves in seeing our patients stay cavity free.

Our friendly team will not only help educate your children but also you the parent so that you can help maintain their good health and can recognize concerns earlier.  We typically begin seeing our little patients as early as 2 yrs old to take them on a fun ride on the chair and to take a quick peek in their mouth.  This initial visit  is more about making them feel comfortable in the office and of course the great prize they get to pick afterwards.  We never charge for these little visits as the goal is really to make the little ones comfortable in a dental environment.  We do recommend that by 3yrs of age (once all of the baby teeth are usually in) we start to see them for regular care visits.  It is during these visits we can help them improve and instill good oral hygiene habits so we can prevent concerns down the road.

Although having straight adult teeth is still years away, there are things we can do preventatively with the baby teeth or as the adult teeth start coming in that can often times prevent the need for costly orthodontic treatment years later.  Again, prevention is our moto.  If we can easily and affordably make small orthodontic corrections along the way, we can help prevent more significant concerns down the road which will help cut down costs and/or treatment times for your child when they become a young adult.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our dental team will help you choose the appropriate toothbrush and oral hygiene regime for your child. It is not only the type of toothbrush that gives the best result but the ability of the child to use it and to use it effectively. Early on parent supervision and assistance during brushing is a crucial part of your child’s oral health.
Fluoride is important as it hardens the enamel making it more resistant to acid attack from the plaque. We recommend a low fluoride children’s toothpaste from between 2 and 6 years of age. At this time they can then use the full strength toothpaste.
Generally children will begin to lose baby teeth between 6-8 years of age and they should continue to lose baby teeth until approximately 12 years of age. After this your child may develop wisdom teeth. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s development please ask the dentist at your next appointment.
If your child appears to have two rows of teeth do not be alarmed as this is just a part of the natural process by which the baby teeth are replaced by the adult teeth. Encourage your child to wiggle the baby teeth so as to speed up exfoliation (baby tooth loss). If the dentist feels the teeth are adversely affecting development they may recommend extraction.
Maintenance and care of baby teeth is very important for the proper growth and development of the adult teeth and the jaw. They maintain space for the adult teeth and are crucial in guiding the adult teeth into their correct positions. Baby teeth are also very important for speech development and eating.
A fissure sealant is a protective coating placed on the biting surfaces of the teeth to prevent tooth decay. It is often used on the first permanent molars. The first molars have deep fissures (grooves) which are susceptible to decay as the fissures can’t been cleaned properly. The sealant makes cleaning the tooth easier and will prevent decay in the pits and fissures.
