Wisdom Teeth Extraction in Calgary, AB

Removal of wisdom teeth is a very common form of oral surgery often used to remove teeth that are erupting sideways which can lead to pain, facial swelling, and extreme discomfort.

Wisdom teeth are often more complicated and difficult to remove than other teeth for several reasons. The primary reason is that the jawbone in the rear of the mouth where wisdom teeth are located is denser than it is in the rest of the mouth.

Other complications surface as a result of the unusual angles of the roots of wisdom teeth. Comfort Care Dentistry in Calgary, AB can help assess your particular situation and answer any specific questions you may have about tooth extraction in Calgary, AB. Your health, your smile, your dentist.

What’s the Rush?

While you may not fully understand the urgency to have a wisdom tooth removed, dentists know that not having it removed can lead to increased pain and swelling which could in turn negatively impact the ability for your sinuses to function properly, thereby leading to additional infections.

What Else Can Happen If Left Untreated

Also, if wisdom teeth are not removed, you may experience one or more of the following:

  • Bite irregularity caused by shifting teeth
  • Bone loss caused by bone destroying tumors and cysts
  • Sinus congestion and headaches
  • Gum irritation which can lead to infection

The Procedure is a Common One for Experienced Dentists

The procedure for removal of wisdom teeth is reasonably simple for an experienced dentist. In fact, they’re almost daily occurrences for experienced dental surgeons.

Prior to the extraction, your dentist will perform a full dental examination to assess whether or not you have an infection caused by the wisdom tooth. If so, you’ll be prescribed antibiotics and asked to wait until the infection has cleared before extraction can begin.

Aftercare is Important Too

You may be surprised to know that your mouth is incredibly fast in its ability to heal. Within a few days of the procedure, any pain or discomfort should be gone. However, it’s important that you follow your dentist’s instruction since serious complication may occur.
